Rise of Indian Single Malts: A Global Whisky Revolution
The birth of Indian Single Malt began in the 90’s and began making a significant impact on the global single malt market in the early 2000s.
The two pioneering brands that led this charge were Amrut and Paul John.
Amrut Distilleries
The turning point for Amrut Distilleries was year 2004 when they entered European Market ,especially to Scotland which was a big bold move.
The brand’s international acclaim was further solidified in 2010 when Amrut Fusion was named the third-best whisky in the world by whisky expert Jim Murray in his “Whisky Bible.”
Till today AMRUT is celebrated as one of the most iconic Indian Single Malts, with flavour balance of peated and unpeated malt, offering a smoky yet fruity profile.
Paul John Distilleries
Paul John, based in Goa, launched its range of single malts in the global market in 2012 , which was must later than Amrut. Still Paul John Brilliance stands out, known for its smoothness and hints of honey, spice, and cocoa.
These 2 brands led the journey of Indian Single Malts which is known for their bold, robust flavours. The rapid maturation process due to India’s climate leads to a faster interaction between the spirit and the cask, imparting intense flavours in a shorter period. These whiskies often exhibit notes of tropical fruits, spices, and a distinctive sweetness that sets them apart from whiskies produced in cooler climates.
International Recognition and Awards
Indian Single Malts have not only captured the hearts of whisky enthusiasts but have also been recognized at prestigious global competitions. Amrut Fusion, for instance, was named the third-best whisky in the world by whisky expert Jim Murray in his “Whisky Bible” in 2010. This recognition helped catapult Indian Single Malts onto the global stage.
