Laphroaig's Soaring Demand Sparks Exciting Expansion Plans
Laphroaig is distinguished as the only whisky to hold the Royal Warrant of the Prince of Wales, an honor personally bestowed during a visit to the distillery in 1994. In Scotland, the distillery refers to Charles by his Scottish title, the Duke of Rothesay, reflecting the traditional recognition of his status in the region .
Laphroaig, is set for a significant expansion as part of a plan by its parent company, Suntory Global Spirits, to modernize and enhance its operations. This project includes increasing the number of stills from seven to eleven, adding 12 new washbacks, and creating a new mash house.
This expansion is designed to meet the growing global demand for Laphroaig’s iconic whisky while also ensuring the distillery’s sustainability. The project will unfold over multiple phases, allowing operations to continue smoothly throughout the construction period. This investment marks the first major development at Laphroaig in over 100 years, reflecting Suntory’s commitment to preserving and growing the distillery’s legacy on Islay.
With the new expansion, the distillery could see a potential increase in production by about 50% or more, depending on the operational efficiency post-expansion.
