Grobund beer by Carlsberg Denmark made from regenerative barley

Carlsberg Launches Grobund: Denmark’s 1st Regenerative Beer

In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable brewing, Carlsberg Denmark has launched Grobund, the country’s first beer crafted entirely from regeneratively grown barley malt. This pioneering brew marks a bold step in Carlsberg’s vision of eco-friendly beer production, aligning innovation with climate responsibility.

Sustainability in Every Sip

Debuted at Denmark’s major political and cultural event, Folkemødet, Grobund isn’t just a new beer—it’s the face of Carlsberg’s commitment to regenerative agriculture. The word Grobund—meaning “foundation” in Danish—symbolizes both the new brew and the beginning of a larger environmental movement within the beer industry.

Grobund is more than a beer. It’s a catalyst for change,” said Peter Haahr Nielsen, Managing Director of Carlsberg Denmark. “We’re already integrating this regenerative malt into our flagship Carlsberg Pilsner. By 2040, we aim to use regenerative grain in all Carlsberg products globally.”

Why Regenerative?

Unlike traditional agriculture, regenerative farming promotes practices such as crop rotation, soil cover, and minimal tillage to restore soil health and enhance biodiversity. Partnering with Agrovi and global consultants, Carlsberg has built its own regenerative standards to align with these principles.

With raw materials contributing to nearly 40% of Carlsberg Denmark’s emissions, this initiative is a strategic move to slash its carbon footprint and lead the brewing industry into a greener future.
