Pisner was developed as part of a sustainable initiative in 2015 by Norrebro Bryghus in collaboration with the Danish Agriculture and Food Council. The idea, often referred to as “beercycling,” involved collecting 50,000 liters of urine from attendees at the Roskilde Festival, one of Northern Europe’s largest music festivals. The collected urine wasn’t used directly in the beer but was instead repurposed as fertilizer for barley fields. This barley was then harvested and used in brewing Pisner, making it a product of recycled human waste in an environmentally friendly way.
